The start of the year is a great time for ADI’s to plan the continual professional development (CPD) you want to focus on in 2024.

We know that it is a really busy time of the year, but it’s important to find time to continue to develop your skills.

CPD is any development activity that has helped you:

  • learn something new
  • refresh your existing knowledge
  • improve your skills
  • keep up-to-date with the latest developments.

When you’re planning your CPD you should consider:

  • which existing skills that you want to improve
  • new skills that will help you in your current role
  • new skills that will help you develop in areas you’re interested in

To help you to do this you can:

  • check and see if your local or national driving instructor association is holding any free or paid for meetings, events or webinars and get them booked and added into your calendar
  • book training courses – either online or in person
  • work with a registered trainer to improve your driver training skills
  • watch videos, listened to podcasts or read blog posts, magazines and books
  • job-shadow someone else
  • keep an eye out for blog post and webinars from DVSA.
  • Engage meetings and training sessions also count as CPD, and certificates of attendance at training/learning sessions can be arranged.

Topics to focus on

Some of the topics you might like to focus on include:

  • driving laws, rules and techniques
  • driving and vehicle technology
  • digital and technology skills
  • personal growth and wellbeing
  • finance and business management
  • disabilities, learning difficulties and neurodiversity
  • data protection
  • health and safety
  • safeguarding

It’s always a good time to review the ADI code of practice which you can read here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/driving-instructor-code-of-practice

and the National standard for driver and rider training https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-standard-for-driver-and-rider-training

Getting started

There is a free template on GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/adi-continuing-professional-development-evaluation-template which makes it easy to plan and record your own training and development.
