Department for Transport figures show that in 2022, under free-flowing traffic conditions, 55% of cars complied with the speed limit on motorways, 89% on National Speed Limit single carriageways and 50% on 30mph roads.

‘Free flowing’ locations are roads with no junctions, hills, sharp bends, speed enforcement cameras or other traffic calming measures.

Overall compliance for 2022 was slightly higher than 2021, where lower levels of compliance may be partly attributed to the impact of the pandemic on lower traffic levels.
