Who Is Driving You? The Impulsive Driver

The Impulsive Driver

By Ian Edwards, New View Consultants Ltd

Young drivers frequently make mistakes, not because of a lack of knowledge or skills but because they make poor safety critical decisions. Often these decisions are as a result of a limited ability to control their impulsive reactions. This presentation, which was part of the Engage Driving Instructor Seminar 2020, explores this concept based on recent work Ian Edwards has completed in Northern Ireland.

Ian Edwards is a Director of New View Consultants Ltd. Ian has been involved in road safety for over 25 years and has worked on a wide range of local, national and international road safety initiatives including the EU-funded HERMES project, the development of a fleet management programme for a multinational company and the development of a number of courses for Road Safety GB.

Ian holds a MSc. in Social Research & Evaluation and a Diploma in Traffic Accident and Safety Management. Ian is currently a PhD student at the University of Sheffield. Ian’s research interests include: the use of e-learning in road safety, impulsivity and the application of behavioural change techniques.

Enlightening drivers about motorbikes

Enlightening drivers about motorbikes

By David Rees, Road Safety Manager Wirral Council

Motorcyclists make up a small proportion of the total traffic volume but, despite recent success in reducing the number of serious and fatal collisions involving riders, across Merseyside they are still involved in a significant proportion of these more serious incidents (24%). How can we raise some of the key issues relating to motorcycle safety in the minds of younger drivers as they embark on their driving career?

David has spent an extensive career over 37 years working for local authorities investigating road traffic collisions to determine a range of interventions including engineering measures and road safety education & engagement programmes. He is currently the Road Safety Manager for Wirral Council and a board member of the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership. David is also a motorcyclist and is the coordinator for the Merseyside Bikesafe initiative with Merseyside Police and a National Observer for IAM Roadsmart.

Enlightening Drivers About Horses

Enlightening Drivers About Horses

By Des Payne, British Horse Society Safety Team Leader

This presentation, which was part of the Engage Driving Instructor Seminar 2020, will give you an insight into what riders are facing out on the roads. This knowledge will give you the extra tools required to share with your learners and help to keep them safe.

Des joined the British Horse Society (BHS) Safety Team 18 months ago after serving with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment for 28 years. His experience in overseeing the training for both horses and soldiers at Melton Mowbray’s Defence Animal Centre has been instrumental in being able to connect with the wider equine industry for riding safely.

For 72 years, the BHS has made a real impact on the lives of horses and horse owners with wide-ranging campaigns and initiatives. The BHS’s core foundations – education, welfare, access and safety – are more important than ever as they make a difference to horses’ lives.

Working alongside other leading organisations, the BHS has developed important advice for equestrians when they encounter cyclists, dogs, low flying aircraft, drones, Chinese lanterns, fireworks and vehicles. 90% of the BHS’s work is road- related and influences the way horses and riders are perceived.
